Definition of gender-related terms used on this website
Cisgender man
He is a man who does not identify as a gender other than the one assigned to him at birth.
It is generally accepted that the adjective ‘cis’ is short for ‘cisgender’.
Transgender man
He is a man whose gender was not assigned at birth.
It is generally accepted that the adjective ‘trans’ is short for ‘transgender’.
Other terms may exist, but these are specific to people of that gender and should not be used by those who are not directly involved.
Non-binary person
This is a person whose gender is neither ‘male’ nor ‘female’: it may be a combination of both, an absence of gender (agender), or another gender.
Non-binary people are included within the trans experience, but some may not identify as trans.
Each non-binary person may or may not require medical and/or administrative transition and may have their own unique gender expression.
An intersex person
This is a person who was born with sexual characteristics (such as sexual anatomy, reproductive organs, hormonal function or chromosomal pattern) that do not fit the conventional definitions of masculinity or femininity.
Intersex people can have any gender identity or sexual orientation.
